is that everyone has them . . .
Everyone.
The other night while awaiting my sushi order to arrive, I was people watching from the patio when I noticed a beautiful woman with 2 pre teen boys in tow – “Wow”, I thought, “she looks amazing!”
And then my next immediate thought was this: as beautiful as this woman was (she was radiant – not just in looks but in expression!), I’ll bet you a good chunk of change that she has something she doesn’t like about her body, or her personality, or something else. Hmmm . . .
And how easy it is for us to look at others and see idealism, beauty, and want . . . as if the grass is always greener if we lived in someone else’s shoes.
The truth is that we all have these insecurities – the blond who wants to be a brunette, the brunette who years for red hair . . . to the “ideal” job that someone else always seems to have.
It’s funny how we tend to judge ourselves more harshly than we judge others we admire.
I wonder how we would treat ourselves . . . and one another if we looked at ourselves through the same lens?
Here’s a little experiment:
- Make a list of at least 3 things you admire or enjoy about yourself (it could be an attitude, appearance, or an activity you lose yourself in).
- Take 5 minutes or so (longer if you’re on a roll!) and write down “proof” under each of these 3 things on why they are true.
- Read them over a couple of times . . . swim in your own awesomeness!
- Stash your list in a handy location (journal, nightstand, posted on your bathroom mirror or fridge).
- Write or schedule yourself at least 3 reminders right away to “review” and reread your list at least once per month.
Enjoy!
